Chapter 60 – The Showrunner Roundtable
by Leesa Dean

This week is gonna be short and sweet. I’m really up to my ears with work, writing, writing, writing, so versus my usual full-length essay/diatribe, just a small observation (and link to an article I feel every tv writer/web series writer/aspiring writer should check out).

Last week The Hollywood Reporter ran their annual Drama Showrunner Roundtablefeaturing showrunners Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad), Matthew Weiner (Mad Men), Aaron Sorkin (The Newsroom) and more. It was thrilling to read and chock full of info and tips from the best in the game. It is a must read.

One of the things that stood out was how a number of them talked about their fear of failure. Vince Gilligan even said he thinks about it all the time and it scares him enough to keep him awake at night. He said that Breaking Bad was one of the rare successes he’s had in his career. But the only thing he really learns from is failure.

It was actually refreshing and empowering to read. It’s a well known fact that most people who are successful have gone through a ridiculous amount of failure–even more than people who AREN’T successful. It’s part of the process. And, it’s true. You really do learn from it. Quickly. Unless you’re a nut. What not to do. What to tweak. And most importantly, a way to get out of your own head in a real world way.

But to hear it from people that big, that talented, who are at the top of their game, frankly, it made me feel better about the whole process. Like I’m part of a big crappy club! That doesn’t serve drinks. Especially when you need ‘em!

Be back next week with my usual.
