Love & Money Dept – TV Writing Deals for 9/10/14

Latest News About Writers Who Are Doing Better Than We Are
by munchman

  • Robert and Michelle King (THE GOOD WIFE) have a new overall deal at CBS TV Studios, where they’re also developing the sitcom BRAIN DEAD, which is described as a “horror-comedy.” (And we know how sidesplittingly funny THE GOOD WIFE is, don’t we? Aw, c’mon, of course we do…?)
  • Ruba Nadda (the upcoming feature OCTOBER GALE) is developing a “romantic drama…set in the world of international politics” for HBO. (Cuz OUTLANDER has become a huge hit for a previously “minor” network and the HBO development apparatik just can’t stand being left out.)
  • Brian McGreevy, Lee Shipman & Philipp Meyer (big-deal best-selling novelists for those who don’t read anymore – which, sadly includes yer humble munchman) have formed their own production company and are actively searching for books to develop into TV series. (Cuz these folks have learned the sad truth of the TV biz – producing is all about taste and the ability to make decisions as opposed to involving talent or, for the most part, even much work. So why shouldn’t they jump onto this bus? For that matter, why shouldn’t we all form our own prodcos, do the free option thing, and then sit back and count our dinero as the shows click on the tube? What’s that? Oh, yeah, I forgot about the key element in this equation: A partner who can sell – or maybe blackmail – the right people to get this stuff on the air. Time to look through our contacts lists and maybe compare notes.)
  • Liz Brixius (NURSE JACKIE) has left her gig as showrunner of the new NBC comedy BAD JUDGE, so if you think you could do better, time to get your agents or manager on the phone. (What? You aren’t sure you’re qualified? Look at it this way. BAD JUDGE is supposed to be a comedy…and even the meter maid who gave me a parking ticket near Santa Monica Pier was funnier than anything NURSE JACKIE had to offer.)

That’s it for now. Write in and tell munchilito what you’ve sold today. TVWriter™ can’t wait to brag to all your friends. (And, more importantly, enemies. Hehehe….)
