Larry Brody: 10 Things That Help Me Keep on Keeping On

The Falls

by Larry Brody

We all know how horrific the early days of July, 2016 have been. Many people I know have spent the past week bent over with despair. Most of those who haven’t reacted that way are those who simply have lost the ability to feel.

They’ve been metaphorically zombified by the events in Falcon Heights, Baton Rouge, Dallas, and who knows what else before or in between.

Not being the sunniest, most positive guy in the world myself, I’ve had to struggle to stay on an even keel. Believe me when I say that I don’t consider myself a guru of any kind, or even someone who can give others advice. I wouldn’t presume to tell anyone what to do about anything.

But, in the hope that others will be able to reach inside themselves and connect with their best selves, I can tell you what’s helping me get through all the bullets and blood that I so mistakenly thought this country had left behind.

These are the little things that not only make me feel alive but also make me glad that I still am:

A strong shower, with its giggling water spirits tumbling merrily over me

The wind that blows in my face, courtesy of the Pacific Northwest

Seeing the sunrise and feeling its warmth

Bird songs

The looks in my dogs’ eyes as they gaze at me

My memory of a time too long ago when a beautiful young tree swept one new limb down onto my face on a still day and brushed me oh-so-casually with a perfect leafy kiss

The sound of the small but very real forest that neighbors don’t even know exists in our backyard

Looking up at the night sky, searching for – and always finding – the stars’ dance

Hearing everything on this planet say “I love you” in its own special way as I pass

Joining my body and soul with the body and soul of that one very special person I have loved since the first time we met

Yes, these are the thoughts, feelings, and words of a man who more than once has been told he is “barely tethered to reality.” But my reality and I love each other, and I hope more fervently than I ever thought possible that you who are reading this find your reality and your love.

Today doesn’t have to be tomorrow.

God doesn’t have to be a bullet…yet again.
