A TV Drama Series About Postpartum Depression? Wow! Just What We’ve Always Wanted

Um, yeah, we’re being just a tad snarky here. It’s just that we think it’s really weird that a YouTube channel that bills itself as “the No. 1 channel for scripted drama on YouTube” has chosen this particular subject to put on a medium – our beloved interwebs – where the average age of the “audience” is exactly the demo most broadcast and cable TV networks are trying to hook – i.e. people too young to even think about having children yet alone having a clue about what postpartum depression is.

OTOH, we could just look at this as what the interwebs and their infinite variety of niches are all about. Yeah, let’s go that route and see if we can take this press release seriously:

WIGS (www.watchwigs.com and www.youtube.com/wigs), the No. 1 channel for scripted drama on YouTube, today announced the premiere of the all-new drama SUSANNA. Exploring the issue of postpartum depression, the series launches Friday, June 14 (9:00 AM ET/6:00 AM PT) with six new episodes. The remaining six episodes will debut Friday, June 21 (9:00 AM ET/6:00 AM PT).

Starring Academy Award winner Anna Paquin (“True Blood,” “X-Men,” “The Piano”) and Maggie Grace (“Lost,” “Taken”), SUSANNA is the story of two sisters, Katie (Paquin), the mother of a newborn and her younger sister, Susanna (Grace), an investment banker on the rise, who has no interest in becoming a mother. But when Katie develops acute postpartum depression and is hospitalized, Susanna must take care of her sister and her sister’s child, while trying to keep the biggest business opportunity of her life from being derailed by her sister’s illness. In the process, she unexpectedly falls in love…with Katie’s child.

“‘Am I my sister’s keeper?’ This is the thematic core explored in SUSANNA,” said Avnet. “Anna and Maggie’s characters are thrown into a very difficult situation and, as performers, they embraced the challenge fearlessly. The result is a piece that addresses the post-partum syndrome without flinching.”

SUSANNA is written and directed by WIGS co-creator Jon Avnet (“Black Swan,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Risky Business”) and also features Rob Benedict (“Waiting,” “Felicity”) and Virginia Madsen (“Sideways,” “Fire with Fire”), star of previous WIGS series JAN.

About WIGS
WIGS was launched in May 2012 by director/producers Jon Avnet (“Black Swan,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,“ “Risky Business”), Rodrigo Garcia (“Albert Nobbs,” “In Treatment,” “Big Love”) and Jake Avnet, and is now the No. 1 channel for scripted drama on YouTube, with more than 40 million views to date and more than 185,000 subscribers. The channel offers high-end original series, short films and documentaries, all starring female leads. Popular series on the WIGS channel include BLUE, about a single mother trying to protect her son from the consequences of her secret career as an upscale escort, starring Julia Stiles, Mark Consuelos, Kathleen Quinlan and Uriah Shelton; LAUREN, which explores the consequences of dealing with sexual assault in the military, starring Troian Bellisario and Jennifer Beals; SERENA, a story of lust, temptation and forbidden love, starring Jennifer Garner and Alfred Molina; and JAN, about a young woman whose first job goes awry, starring Virginia Madsen, Stephen Moyer and Caitlin Gerard.

Okay, okay, we’re interested because we’re really curious about what the quality of the writing by Avnet will be. Not sure yet whether we’re interested enough to watch, though. We’ll think about it. Maybe, if the weekend doesn’t pan out, we’ll take a look then. What about you?
